The Scent of Jasmine edition by Helen McNicol Literature Fiction eBooks
Jasmine is a silver eyed, beautiful vampire who loves to enjoy the night in clubs where the pounding music and flashing lights can fill her senses with pleasure and allow her to be just another face in the crowd. Being a vampire who lives in a protected, guarded community with her family and friends, who are also vampires, protection, privacy, and security are essential. These vampires are unique in the fact that they despise killing humans unless they must for protection and self preservation. She travels along with her elder Gareth, and sometimes also Cookie, for protection. After seeing a eye catching human, Mark, in a night club, she waits a week and then goes back in hopes to find him there once again. Upon seeking him out, she plays the coy girl and cat-and-mouse games with him. Being entirely captivated by him and questioning the "love-at-first-sight" feeling, she agrees to seeing him the following night. Could he be the person she has been waiting for? Could he be the mate she needs and the companion she desires?Mark has been wronged by a vampire. Having his entire family murdered by one, he has had a vendetta against finding the vampire, Drake, that killed all of his loved ones. He is now alone. For ten years, he has searched and tracked Drake, the vampire who killed his family, to the very city that Jasmine lives hoping to finally find the chance to kill him and all of his family, which would include Jasmine. He has no idea that Jasmine and her coven are "good vampires." All he cares about is seeking his revenge on the vampires that destroyed his world. And killing vampires is something he has become very, VERY good at over the past decade. Knowing Jasmine is a vampire he invites her back to his place the next night, a place away from all the music and witnesses of the club.
So after Jasmine arrives at Mark's place of stay the next night and finds her self being outsmarted and at the mercy of the human who wishes to destroy her and everyone she loves, what will happen to her? Will Mark finally be avenged or will he give Jasmine, the vampire who he has now fallen in love with, a chance to explain the benevolence of her people and spare her life? Can Mark accept her and take her back to her people and let them cure her of the poison that now runs through her veins that is slowely killing her? And if so, will Jasmine ask and allow her coven to spare Mark's life and giving herself a future with the only person she has even fallen in love with?
There are many things that I do not like about this story: it is very short, it is under-explained and under-developed, and it's not an easy read.
This e-book surprised me in the fact that it is only 15 pages long, 19 pages if you include the cover page, dedication, and about-the author. 15 pages is such a short length for a story that need the length of a novel. Some story lines can be written fully in 15 pages. This story can't. The author kind of makes it work, but the characters and story line is just so short that you keep asking yourself, "wait, what just happened?" When you're writing about vampires and revenge, you have to allow yourself time to squash out what "Hollywood myths" are true and aren't. This author doesn't. So it gets confusing when she starts writing about the actions that Mark is doing to Jasmine that run counter to the common idea of a vampire and what can kill a vampire. McNicol provides the absolute minimum of what's required to understanding the plot and barely gets away in allowing the reader to see it's actually a focused plot.
I also didn't find it an easy read. There were no grammatical errors and it flowed, but because this world was under-written and explored, it made me have to re-read certain paragraphs a couple of time to realize and understand aspects of this world.
This wasn't a horrible story. I think that McNicol makes it work. If you're looking for a short story to read or a story that will leave you thinking about what happens to the characters after you finished it, then you might really like it. But it's not one of those short stories that you download to read while you're waiting in the doctors office or in the subway. It just requires a lot of attention to read because it is so quick to happen and because you can't miss a paragraph or skim. You need every word to figure out and put together the aspects of this world that the author leaves out.
After re-reading it a second time, having now understood certain things about the storyline and characters, I find that it is a promising love story. I think Jasmine is a sweet vampire and find Mark's personality kind of lovable. I can not recommend nor not recommend this novel.
